Data Availability Statements
Data availability statements are short disclosures of data and how it is or is not available to other researchers. On this page we provide guidance on what to write for a Data Availability Statement, and several scenarios for your data and what to write.
These statements are becoming increasingly required by journals and publishing groups. Springer Nature group has recently (2023) required all journal publications to include a data availability statement section.
The basic goal of these statements is for researchers to disclose the data used in projects, and to answer these questions:
- Is the data available?
- Where is the data available from?
- How can others gain access to the data?
- Are there any restrictions on the data?
Publication Guidance
Publishing organizations have written guidelines for writing data availability statements, at the time of writing (March 2023) Taylor and Francis has the most straightforward guidance with examples of statements.
