How the Team Helps Researchers
The Geo Data Team has helped many researchers with their projects, from the standard compliance with documentation and regulations, to building tools to help researchers work more efficiently, and in some cases helping with new methods of analysis.
- Testing software and deployment methods with servers and Docker containers
- Testing the open-source AI generated text recognition tool Binoculars for accuracy and processing times
- Testing Web Open Drone Map (WebODM) in Docker with Nvidia GPU support
- Creating data workflows for our microscopes, spectrometers, and other analytical tools to manage collection, archiving, and distribution to researchers
- Managing an enterprise GIS environment for researchers to work with the hundreds of terabytes on our network drives
- Recovering and converting old datasets to open data
- Developing custom scripts for data processing/harvesting
- Linking researchers with programmers and infrastructure to write code and deploy high-performance computing, databases, and websites
- Creating workshops, workflow standards, and storage strategies for research projects and groups to coordinate and succeed. A few projects that we have been actively involved:
- WIMBY
- EXCITE2
- Transport Group at SGPL
- MIBIREM
We have examples of how the Data Team has helped researchers in articles on the Intranet, you can find links here:
- From Dusty Archives to the Cloud: rescuing data from floppy disks, tapes, and CDs and bringing it to long-term network storage
