Geo data – support for researchers

Privacy Parade March 2023

This week is the Privacy Parade 2023, with events all week across the Science Park and at the central campus.

Join the Geosciences faculty privacy officer, Francisco Romero Pastrana, on Wednesday 29 March at 14:00 for a workshop on handling and protecting personal data. Please register using this link before March 28.

Also, RDM is working on materials that help researchers and research supporters to deal with personal data in their research, including the E-learning Privacy basics for researchers (available via the Ulearning platform) and the Data Privacy Handbook.

Workshop: GDPR in practice: a practical approach on how to handle personal data

The Workshop will be held in Veningmenizesgebouw C (VMC) 0.20.

Using personal data in the age of the GDPR is a tough challenge. This workshop will show you how to organize the handling of personal data of your research and non-research project. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or just starting your PhD, running a multinational research project or a single survey, starting a webpage, organizing a conference or running a newsletter, it is important to learn how to shape your data processing to comply with the GDPR.

In this workshop we aim to demonstrate a solution for organizing personal data with full GDPR compliance using the “Privacy Scan”. The Privacy Scan is a tool developed at the Geosciences Faculty of Utrecht University to facilitate evaluating and documenting a project’s GDPR compliance. The privacy scan is based around four core components which must be applied for all activities: have a clear and legitimate purpose, design a safe data processing, inform and provide adequate control to the people behind the processed data, and document your compliance using the privacy scan format.

Please fill in the registration form before March 28, so that we can know the expected attendance.

Privacy Materials from RDM Support in the Library

In addition, the Research Data Management Support is working on materials to help researchers and research supporters deal with personal data in their research. I would like to highlight 2 of these that will both be finalized end of May:

  1. E-learning Privacy basics for researchers: this is a self-paced e-learning that contains all the basics of privacy in research, such as the definition of personal data, data subjects’ rights, legal bases, information letters, anonymization and pseudonymization, data storage and sharing, etc. It has been created in collaboration with the faculty privacy officers, data managers, ethics committee members and learning experts and aims to be as to-the-point as possible. The e-learning is nearly finished and will be available for everyone with a Solis ID via the Ulearning platform. When finished, the RDM website will feature the e-learning in the workshops section.
  1. Data Privacy Handbook: The Data Privacy Handbook is an online knowledge base for privacy in research performed at Utrecht University. It contains sections on all topics related to privacy in research, including how to design a project, important documents, and techniques and tools to handle personal data in research. The Data Privacy Handbook was created in close collaboration with privacy and data management support at the university. A large part is already published and can be consulted via https://uu.nl/privacyhandbook.

If you have any questions or suggestions related to these materials, please contact Dorien Huijser (data manager at Research Data Management support).
